Ancient Beginnings

Every legend tells the tale that the gods created the mortal world in their image; seven territories, all precisely crafted with the utmost amount of thought and care. A world that was peaceful and fair, but did not exist without balance. It was important that all living things were in harmony with each other.

As the first mortals started to explore their gifted lands, they were filled with wonder and appreciation for what was bestowed upon them. This gratitude that was displayed by them allowed them to foster a close relationship with not only the gods who gave the gift, but the spirits who lived among them as well. When mortals first started becoming close with their gods, it was discovered that the world hadn’t only consisted of just the mortal realm, but rather, there was something known as the spirit realm as well; one where their gods had resided, but also the souls of those who had departed. Mortals would soon adopt the habit of sending prayers of gratitude to their gods and the spirits who lived among them as well as offerings when they wished to receive their blessings, and they were soon to find their world start flourishing even more. The gods and spirits were quite receptive to prayers and gifts, aiding mortals wherever they could. There were soon civilizations that were risen from the simple lands, towns and cities were created so that mortals could live comfortably within a community. Each territory would soon find itself housing multiple towns and cities, leading to each one being ruled over by a royal family to ensure they had people to watch over them. The relationship between mortals and gods stayed strong, and some had begun to cultivate relationships with specific gods; farmers would pray to the god of the earth for a bountiful harvest, while fishermen would pray to the goddess of the seas to keep them safe in rough waters. Things stayed peaceful for a long, long time.

Unfortunately, as years passed, it seemed that peace wasn’t enough for some. As mortal populations grew, so would the power that some territories possessed, and one in particular had stuck out. One of the seven had stepped outside of the scale of balance the gods had provided for them, proclaiming that they deserved more of what life had to offer. They wanted more land, more control of the map, and they had believed it was in their right to take what should be theirs. The first troops were deployed, and from that moment, the harmony across the lands had shattered; The Great War had started, and lives were being taken at an alarming rate. The land that started everything was said to be ruthless, callous, and legend says they stopped at nothing to conquer as much as they could. The other territories were quickly given two options: either fight back, or let themselves be overtaken by the will of another land.

The war had reached an intense climax with the death of a certain individual: a highly beloved king of one of the compromised lands. As soon as the monarch fell, the gods had seen enough, and stepped in to put a stop to this war once and for all. However, while the gods were able to halt the mortal catastrophe, something completely unforeseen happened at the same time; for reasons still unknown to this day, the intervention of the gods had caused strange, powerful beings known as “calamities” to suddenly spring forth and cause their own destruction to the mortal lands. Both mortals and the gods alike were horrified; they had only meant to restore the peace, but now there were new, more threatening entities causing disarray.

Once it had proved difficult to stop these calamities, the god known as the king of fate, Ansel, stepped up to protect the mortals he cared so deeply for. Even he could not wave a wand and stop the calamities, but he could create a small piece of land to be a safe haven from them. The land known as Reverie was created by his hand, a designated space that the calamities could not reach. Mortals who were innocent during the time of war were deemed worthy enough to step inside its bounds, and once all worthy mortals were collected, a dome-like barrier was created around Reverie to not only seal everyone inside for their protection, but to make sure the calamities could not penetrate it. A new royal family was appointed to watch over Reverie’s people, and peace was once again restored.

Centuries had passed, and the stories of war and calamities started becoming a far distant memory to those living within Reverie’s walls. Reverie was safe, life was normal and calm, did they need to concern themselves with such fairytales? As far as everyone living within the walls knows, the outside world is completely destroyed anyway…
